Medical English for Healthcare Professionals

This course improves English communication for healthcare professionals, students, and researchers. It combines medical vocabulary, professional interaction, and global health topics to prepare participants for clinical practice, international collaboration, and academic growth. Activities include patient roleplays, case presentations, ethical debates, and technical reading/writing. Themes cover microbial and tropical diseases, vaccination, and antimicrobial resistance, connecting Brazilian realities to global contexts.

At the end of the course, students will be able to

  • Understand and use medical terminology in English in clinical and academic contexts.
  • Communicate clearly and appropriately with patients and healthcare professionals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  •  Read, interpret, and discuss scientific articles and technical materials in the medical field in English.
  •  Prepare and deliver case studies, reports, and oral presentations using appropriate vocabulary and structure.
  •  Critically reflect on ethical and cultural aspects of medical practice in international contexts.
  •  Use English as a tool for professional development and integration with the global scientific community.

Students and healthcare professionals who wish to excel in the market and expand their international opportunities. Suitable for students with an intermediate level of English proficiency, interested in strengthening their linguistic and intercultural competence in medical practice.

Coordination

Joanne Catherine Coffey Ferreira – English teacher with 12 years of international experience teaching the language in countries such as Brazil, Guatemala, and the United Arab Emirates. Holds a Bachelor of Arts (European Studies) from the University of Limerick, Ireland (2000), and internationally recognized certifications, including CELTA (British Council, Abu Dhabi, 2013), TEC (2020, Cultura Inglesa), and Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) Modules 1 and 2 (Cultura Inglesa, Salvador, 2021). A native English speaker, fluent in Portuguese and Spanish, with intermediate proficiency in German and Irish. Her classes stand out for creativity, interactive approach, and strong cultural awareness. Currently works as an instructor in the Corporate English course at Selfout.

Viviane de Matos Ferreira – Ph.D. and M.Sc. in Biotechnology and Investigative Medicine and Health from Fundação Oswaldo Cruz, Bahia (IGM/FIOCRUZ), affiliated with the Laboratory of Pathology and Molecular Biology (LPBM), where she conducts research on the molecular epidemiology of Neisseria meningitidis and Bordetella pertussis. Holds a degree in Biomedicine from Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública (EBMSP) (2007). She was part of the research team at the Laboratory of Immunology and Molecular Biology at the Institute of Health Sciences (ICS), Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) (2005–2007) and the Microbiology Service at Hospital São Rafael (HSR) (2012–2015). Served as a visiting researcher at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, USA (2017). Specialist in Clinical Analysis from Universidade Católica do Salvador (2011). Participated in the COVID-19 Diagnostic Platform at Fiocruz-Bahia (2020) and currently teaches at EBMSP and coordinates the course Tropical and Neglected Infectious Diseases: An Integrated One Health Approach to Public Health at EBMSP.
